Sheamoisture Coconut & Hibiscus KIDS : Product Review

I am a fan of Sheamoisture deep conditioners, souffle gel and a few of the spritz's.  The main issue I have with Sheamoisture is the ingredients are very similar no matter which line you pick.  I know the company was founded on using Shea butter but my hair is so not a fan of heavily laden Shea butter products. Most of the deep conditioners or masques have a high content of water in them so they sink into my hair easily. Those that do not , I use as a pre-shampoo treatment and then really do not have the need for it to sink it because its basically to coat my hair strands  to retain moisture in the washing process.

Earlier in the year Sheamoisture released several new items and among them were kid geared products.  If you do not know by now, that doesn't stop a full fledged product junkie like myself.  If the ingredients look good , then I'm game.  So, I found a few items and really was not expecting much because the Coconut & Hibiscus line is not a favorite of mine . I don't deal well with coconut and then to add shea butter too? That's why the Curling Smoothie did not work for me.  It's too heavy and not moisturizing (wet) enough for me.

When I spied the Curling Buttercream  and Extra Moisturizing  Detangler my eyes perked up.  Butter cream you say? Well alright!! ...EXTRA moisturizing? Well I had to try them out.  Right off the bat the butter cream is way more moisturizing than the smoothie.  I can feel the moisturizing properties when I scooped some out. It felt wet compared to the smoothie, which felt....buttery.

The Detangler I was skeptical of because its a spray and watery. When I think of detangling my hair , I want slippery and creamy. Little did I know the combination of these two products would keep the moisture in my hair for seven days without me having to reapply.

The kicker for me that I think are making these two of my favorite items is ...the  slippery Elm and marshmallow extracts. What I will say is , using the detangler by itself, is nothing special. I think they were formulated to specifically use together OR if you're going to use the detangler seal it in with a butter type product to seal in the additional moisture. I love both of these items together and will continue to buy them as long as Sheamoisture is selling.

The Steps of a Weave: Pictured

Natural By Design Cosmetics: Curl Magic

Natural By Design Cosmetics caught my eye on Etsy a few years back due to her different ingredients she likes to add to her products. There's always an intriguing twist to something and it continues to draw me in. A favorite of mine is her Nectar Leave in Conditioner which though geared for fine haired folks, has suckered me in. The culprit is fenugreek. That however is a review for another time. This review is about her Curl Magic line.

In the line up is :

From the website

Ok so what's the hype over the Curl Magic line of products? It my latest contribution to my fellow Curlies to help improve curl retention. This WILL NOT CHANGE your curl pattern just help improve the look of the curls. This is accomplished by including some stuff you would have never thought of: tomatoes and rice. Yep I said it tomatoes and rice in the form of fermented tomatoes and rice protein. The idea is to create better formation of the disulfide bonds that form curls and to provide better moisture to give it a smooth and sleek look

Did you see the fermented tomatoes and rice protein??? What! I just had to pick this line up in the springtime.  The ingredients intrigued me and I was suckered right on in. I have used the conditioner on my hair several times and so far it is my favorite out of her cleansing conditioner lineup. Its moisturizing without stripping the hair and my scalp is always clean after I lightly scrub with the pads of my fingers. I dig it.

Cleansing Conditioner Ingredients: Distilled water, Cetearyl Alcohol (and) PEG-40 Castor Oil (and) Stearalkonium Chloride, glycerin, burdock root, Mentha piperita (Pepperment) Leaf Extract (and) Yucca Leaf Extract (and) Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) Leaf Extract (and) Urtica dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract (and) Melissa officinalis (Melissa) Leaf Extract, Tomato Fruit Ferment Extract & Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract & Keratin Amino Acids & Acyl Coenzyme A Desaturase, Gluconolactone (and) Sodium Benzoate and centronium chloride.
8oz $10.50

Curl Magic Leave In Conditioner is the perfect base to all your curly and wavy hair styling needs. Helps to reinforce your curl pattern AND lend a hand with much needed moisture. Is your hair not a fan of glycerin products? Then this leave in conditioner is also for you! This conditioner uses the moisture and humectant properties of coconut milk instead of glycerin. Major score!

Yup, this is a winner to follow up after the Cleansing Conditioner. It sinks in, doesnt leave my hair white and best of all it dries soft and touchable. I have even used this on my current weave install with success! I love the fact that its moisturizing without being heavy.

Leave in Conditioner Ingredients: distilled water, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, organic coconut oil, soy protein, cetyl esters, coconut milk, Tomato Fruit Ferment Extract & Rice Extract & Keratin Amino Acids & Acyl Coenzyme A Desaturase, and Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol
8oz $8.75
16oz $10.00

And the icing on the cake is the Curl Magic Styling Cream

Curl Magic Styling Cream was created with the wash and go aka curly girl method in mind. This cream will help define curls, waves and even twists with its Curl Magic base but also the addition of dehydrated xanthan gum. Best yet no mineral oil, petroleum or silicone's.

Yes, I like this indeed. There's not a butter in sight. Even though its very creamy, its lightweight and holds the hair after it dries with a touchable soft feel.  Oddly enough, I haven't tried this with my WashnGo's but for twist-outs. When I purchased, I ordered the 4oz. I can see myself being very heavy handed with this. I will be going back for a bigger size for the spring time when I unleash my hair.

Styling Cream Ingredients: distilled water, rice bran oil,Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth 20, black seed oil, cetyl esters, sodium lactate, Tomato Fruit Ferment Extract & Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract & Keratin Amino Acids & Acyl Coenzyme A Desaturase, Oleic/Linoleic/Linolenic Polyglycerides, dehydroxathan gum, Gluconolactone (and) Sodium Benzoate, fragrance and citric acid.
2oz sample $3.75
4oz $6.75
8oz $10.00

My latest experiment with the Curl Magic line has been to style my Peruvian Weave with it. I will update this post with how it turns out after fully drying.

* The only thing I would change is the smearing of the bottles when you touch them if your hands are wet

Moisturize and Seal: Winter Favorites

It's been a really weird Fall/Autumn in New Jersey. We've had snow storms, followed by ice storms followed by 65 degree weather all in the span of a week. Regardless of what mother nature is throwing at us,  at night time before bed I have to moisturize and seal my hair before bed to keep it pliable. Depending on what I use, I can just put my dread soc on and not have to re-do my moisturizing routine.

These three lines in this review have been great at keeping my hair pliable, soft, sheeny and moisturized for the following day. The sealing act is actually kind of sealing AND styling at the same time. I don't use anything with hold really but it gives me some type of definition if I don't fluff my hair out too much.

First up is Coilyheadchick , rebranded to Smooth Naturals.

  • My favorite item out of the products that I have tried is her, Ultimate Hair Treat is the ULTIMATE TREAT for your Coils, Kinks and Curls, this concentrated hair treat can be used as a leave-in and daily moisturizer. For fine hair this treat can also be used as a weekly deep conditioner
    • Ingredients: Purified Water, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Aloe Vera Juice, Castor Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, Pro-Vitamin B5, Optiphen, Vitamin E, Citric Acid and Fragrance 8ozs for $12.00
I don't have fine hair so I use it as a leave in conditioner/daily moisturizer on dry hair. It smells like orange dreamsicle, yummy and sinks into my hair very well. Coconut oil is further down on the list so it doesn't bother my hair by leaving it in. I then seal, and twist my hair with her Shine & Seal
  • The Shine & Seal gives your hair GREAT shine while sealing in your moisture.
    • Ingredients: Illipe Butter, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Olive Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Jojoba Oil, Kokum Butter, Candelilla Wax, Soy Wax, Vitamin E and Fragrance 4ozs for $10.00
The Shine & Seal is very rich and you only need a dab per section. Due to using so little of this to seal, the coconut oil isnt making my hair feel hard and brittle. The combination of these two product yield soft, sheeny, plump looking hair. Out of the three lines, this is my third favorite.

Second up is All things O Natural.
  • The Natty Moist is very versatile. You can use it to detangle, prepoo, a body lotion or a leave in conditioner. Our hydrating Moist, infused with Ayurvedic herbs, is beneficial for helping to repair dry, damaged and over processed hair. Our Moist can also be used to hydrate and soothe dry skin.
    • Ingredients: Distilled water infused herbal blend of Brahmi, Calendula, Hibiscus, Lavendar, Neem, Stinging Nettle, Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Cupuacu butter, Panthenol , Jojoba oil, Evening Primrose, Jamaican Black Castor oil, BTMS, Cetearyl Alcohol , Guar,  Sweet Orange oil, Potassium Sorbate,  Citric Acid,  oil blend for fragrance, Tamanu oil, Watermelon seed oil  2ozs for $4.99, 12ozs for $16.99, 32ozs for $42.00
I love this leave in conditioner, its very slippery. It allows you to detangle on dry hair , wet hair or damp hair.  I mainly use it on dry hair because that's when I style my hair. Its creamy and smells divine.  You can pick 5 scents and unscented if you re not a fan.  I then  seal, and twist/braid with ATON Natty Butter.
  • The Natty Butter is blend of mainly Shea butter but it is whipped so well, its like a pocket of air. Again as with all butter blends, you truly only need a dab per section or your hair will be oily and greasy. ATON likes for you to get multiple uses out of their products so you can use the Natty Butter on your skin as well.
    • Ingredients:Unrefined Shea Butter, Avocado Butter, Castor Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil Infused w/Calendula, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Tamanu Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Vitamin E, Essential Oil Blends for fragrance (contains Sweet Orange Oil and Lavender Oil) 2ozs for $5.99 4ozs for $10.99 8ozs for $18.99 16ozs for $34.50

Afroveda : Bhringaraj Herbal Hair Growth Balm

Afroveda introduced this new product via email prior to her Black Friday sale this year.  You could pre-order this and when it was fully available it would ship.  I used to adore Afroveda before the reformulations. I love anything Ayurveda and she was doing it big time.  I took the bite again after years of saying I would not repurchase and again I was disappointed.  I ordered three hair butters and promptly sold them on the swap board once they arrived. They still are Shea butter laden and  do not absorb in my hair anymore. I am sad but it seems there are a lot of other lines coming out with ayurvedic influences so all isn't lost.

Well , I wanted this balm because I knew I would be in protective styles a lot in the upcoming year and I wanted something that would allow me to grease my scalp and nourish it at the same time. I thought I hit pay dirt. Unfortunately this isn't a product you can leave on your scalp.  I didn't realize this until Afroveda actually told me on Instagram.  For some reason , I totally missed the fact that it says, "keep on for 15-20 minutes, then wash and condition as normal".  I was using it for about 3 weeks as a grease. Luckily there wasn't any ill effects.

I don't think this product has fully launched or maybe she scrapped it because its not listed anywhere on the website. In the email the below was stated:

NEW!!
BHRINGARAJ HERBAL HAIR GROWTH BALM
An herbal infusion of ayurvedic herbs, organic coconut and castor seed oils, this natural blend was created to improve the condition of the scalp and stimulate healthy hair growth. Coconut oil, with its conditioning properties, works as a carrier oil to deliver the most potent nutrients to the hair follicle, helping to stimulate growth.  Additional benefits include:

♥ Licorice Root to relieve scalp soreness and itchiness
♥ Bhringaraj (the "king of tresses") and Brahmi for scalp health
♥ Peppermint & Rosemary to stimulate growth
♥ Sulfur for growth efficacy
♥ Additional Ayurvedic herbs and botanicals known for centuries to promote scalp health and hair growth
4ozs for $14.00

Ingredients: Castor seed oil, soybean oil infused with Amla extract, Bhringaraj extract, Brahmi, Rosemary,Comfrey Root, Stinging nettle, Basil, Passionflower, Sulfur, Candelilla beeswax, Hibiscus extract, Peppermint essential oil, Tea tree Essential oil, Lavender Essential oil  * nowhere on the jar is coconut oil

Since finding out that I must wash it out, I would recommend you have to use a shampoo to get this out of your hair. The first ingredient is castor seed oil, and lower in the list is beeswax.  It does melt on contact but when I cowashed my hair , I could still see the product on my edges after.

FYI: this smells to high hell!  Its the sulfur in it plus other ingredients but thank goodness it doesn't linger.

Hide my hair Challenge 2014

I'm being completely honest with myself. I love my hair, I really do, however wearing it in its curly state has hindered me in really growing my hair out. I love a good ole wash and go. Its easy, simple to do and I can go on my way in less than 30 minutes. The down side is my hair curls on it self and then detangling after a week is a mess because my hair really doesn't like to be touched. I, however do NOT like protective styling with my own hair.  If you've been following me for awhile , you know I can change it up with kinky twists and weave. I just haven't been sticking to it like I should. So 2014 is bust or go home!

I will be hiding my hair in weaves for 2014. That might be amended to kinky twists later in the year if I'm tired of weaving it up. Weaves however let me go 2 months with ease.  I just have to make sure I wash weekly and oil my scalp with an applicator bottle. I have also added in hair vitamins.  I will be taking Priteva vitamins for 3 months, then switching to Hairfinity for three months and then back to Priteva. I have taken Priteva in the past but not for hair growth. I wanted to grow my nails out. I was very successful but the nail salon and gel did a sister in.

Anyone want to join in on the challenge with me? I will be keeping this hair in until February 20th, then resting a week and back into another weave for an additional two months. I will update when I take my hair down in February.

Shescentit Product Reviews

I tried some Shescentit products back in 2009 and I was not impressed. At the time I tried samples of the Gillian and seyani butters,  the banana brûlée and tea tree and grapefruit conditioner along with the coco something leave in. It wasn't anything over the moon so I never went back until she released new items  this year.  Earlier in the year I ordered the Buriti Hair milk, Riche Moisture Mask, and Coconut Sorbet. I was pleasantly surprised.  Everything was really nice and I fell in love with the Coconut sorbet.  It is amazing as a prepoo treatment prior to washing . It detangles my hair and gets the shed hair out prior to washing.  Its listed that you can use it as a hairdress but leaving coconut in my hair doesnt really work out for me

For Black Friday, I ordered another Coconut Sorbet, her new Blueberry Cowash Conditioner and Papaya Curly Souffle.

I started off my wash day with the coconut sorbet and Hairveda Vatika Frosting as a prepoo on dry hair. After letting the oils soak in, I then detangled with my fingers and sectioned my hair into 4 sections with ponytail holders..
Prepoo'n

Blueberry Co-Wash Conditioner is a rich nourishing conditioner that moisturizes while gently cleansing by using the extracts of Yucca Root. It is a wonderful blend of conditioners, oils and botanical extracts meant to give your hair a true spa-like experience. Hair is left soft, detangled and frizz free.

$10.50 for 9ozs

After wetting one section of hair, I added the cowash, added a little more water and then proceeded to scrub my scalp. I put the ponytail holder back on and did the same to the other three sections. Once I finished the last section , I returned to the first one and washed the conditioner out. My hair was soft, bouncy and as the water rinsed off I could see the dirt rinsing away, letting me know that it was cleansing as well.

After rinsing I oil rinsed with BASK Beauty Limited edition oil ( review to come later) and after rinsing, added the Buriti Hair Milk, and twisted with the Papaya Curly Souffle.

Buriti Hair Milk is a multi-benefit conditioning creamy concotion that provides desired nutrients to textured hair. It helps to prevent frizz and protect from humidity while softening beautiful curls, detangle stubborn knots and add shine to dull hair.Buriti Oil penetrates hair strands to nourish deep in the core, aiding in hair health and restoring much needed moisture

Purified Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Mangifera indica (Mango) Butter, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Vitis vinifera (Grape Seed) Oil, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, Emulsifying Wax, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut ) Oil, Mauritia Flexuosa (Buriti) OIl, Vegetable Glycerin, Sapote (Pouteria sapota) Oil, Silk Amino Acid, Dimethicone, Panthenol Vit B5, Propylene Glycol (and) Diazolidinyl Urea (and) Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance, Orange Essential Oil.

After rinsing

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf juice and Acrylates/c-10 Alkyl Acrylates, Olive Butter, Avocado Butter, Glyceryl Stearate and Cetearyl Alcohol and Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Behentrimonium Methosulfate,Shea Butter, Macadamia Nut Oil, Caprylic/ Capric Triglyceride, Argan oil, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Seed Oil, Agave Nectar, Panthenol Vit b5, Phenoxyethnol, Orange Extract, Fragrance.

5.5 ozs for $10.50
9.5 ozs for $19.50

After applying the hair milk and detangling, I then added the curly souffle.  My hair for once dried really quick and soft. I expected an ultra defined twist out the next day but after putting my twists in I went skating. The exercise made my twists puff out. The next day , the twist-out was still defined but not as much as it would have been if I hadnt exercised. The weather at the time in NJ was really cold, so my hair had a tiny bit of hold to it, probably due to the agave nectar but overall., I liked it.

In the future, I would repurchase the curly souffle and the coconut sorbet. Her other items are preserved by germall , which Im not a fan of, especially if I'm buying from an online vendor.

Profolla Silk Product Reviews

Profolla Silk sent me these products to review earlier in the year. I am not one to do a full review off of one use and due to the fact they sent me four items, I wanted to use the products fully before I gave a review.

I received the Moisture Conditioner, Moisture Shampoo, Growth Shampoo and Growth Conditioner and the Hair Nourish Vitamins *.  What some companies fail to realize with Naturals is we prefer the conditioner to be bigger than the shampoo because we use more of the conditioner and less of the shampoo.

Since I am always looking for moisture , I immediately used the Moisture Conditioner as a leave in and liked it. It absorbed very well on dry/damp hair and left my hair smooth and soft. Out of all the products this was my favorite. Its also touted as a deep conditioner. Its very creamy, almost lotion like. The only thing keeping me from buying again is the size/preservative.

* I did not use the vitamins as they are not coated. Any pill that is not coated kicks my gag reflect into overdrive and I can not swallow.

Profolla Silk says this about the Moisture Conditioner:
Our Best Moisture Conditioner for Black Hair!
Reduces breakage + adds control, body and shine to dull, lifeless hair!
Super-moisturizing, deep conditioner reduces breakage, dryness, tearing
Formulated with natural LustrePlex for brilliant shine, strength, and hydration
Excellent for natural, relaxed and chemically-treated hair

The ingredients listed on the website state :
Ingredients:
Water, BTMS, Glycerin, Emu Oil, Jojoba Oil, Lusterplex complex, Fragrance, Germall Plus (Paraben-Free Preservative)
8oz for $15.45 * on sale

The Moisture Shampoo didn't strip my hair, however I made sure when I applied it, it was only to my scalp and let the water run the shampoo down the length of the hair. It also smells like fruit candy, I'm a sucker for anything that smells yummy , LOL.

Profolla Silk says this about the Moisture Shampoo
Our best moisturizing shampoo for black, African American and ethnic hair types!
Extreme Moisturizer with Omega 3's replenish hydration without weight or loss of body
Nutrition complex with Silk Proteins and Panthenol for smoothness, strength & hair growth
Specially developed for Black and African American hair types prone to dryness, breaking or poor manageability
Formulated with patented LustrePlex® clinically shown to improve reflectivity (sheen), strengthen (up to 28%), and smooth and soften
Excellent for use after color treatments, relaxing, straightening or perms to restore moisture
It can be used with hair vitamins for ultimate growth including growing your hair out or growing your hair long fast.

The ingredients are not listed on the website, but on my bottle its listed as:
Ingredients:
Water, Chemoryl tm SFB-105K Surfactant, Olefin, Betain, Cocamide DEA, glycerin, HNF Blend, Lusterplex, Silk Protein, Q-pearl, Panthenol, Germail Plus, fragrance, Tetra EDTA, Emu oil, Jojoba oil, Citric acid, Crothix
12oz for $14.45

The only difference I can detect between the Moisture line and the Growth line is the smell and one or two different ingredients.  I cant commit to using a shampoo and conditioner for an extended period of time so I've only tried the Growth line  a few times. My son has been using the Growth conditioner and shampoo for the last 3 months.  I have noticed that every two weeks, his hair needs a shape-up but then again his hair grows fairly quick regardless. Hes very heavy handed with conditioner so he has since used up the Growth conditioner.

Profolla Silk says this about the Growth Conditioner
ProFolla Silk® Growth Conditioner uses our patented Trichogen complex of herbal extracts scientifically tested to help hair grow like it should. This is our best-selling hair growth conditioner specifically formulated for Black, African American and course or dense hair types.

So my hair twin, Tiny Closet reviewed this awhile back and I had to jump on it because its local and on the ground. Of course, there is a whole line up that's available. You can find it at your local Walgreen's, CVS, Walmart, etc.
In the Nourishing Care line up is:

I am and have always been a conditioner seeker, so I purchased the Daily Treatment conditioner and the regular conditioner. I know Dove usually has 'cones in it but I was using these daily in the summer and washing each day so I wasn't worried about build up.

The conditioner and daily treatment have similar ingredients but the daily is slated to be able to be used daily while treating the hair. If you dont mind the ingredients I say give it a shot.  My hair was well hydrated and easy to wear in a wash and ago style.  I have never tried any Dove hair products before and I was pleasantly surprised.
