Surprised myself

I'm not much of a length checker as I don't heat style. I can never tell if my hair is growing but I can tell if its breaking, lol. The styles I usually wear encourage a lot of shrinkage.  Lately I've been twisting out my bangs and bunning the back.  Yesterday , I went into the bathroom to reset my bun as it was too tight and as I took it down I noticed my hair seemed really full so I snapped a picture.

A few things I've learned about my hair:

1. The more I stretch it as days go by, the straighter my hair gets.
2. I need to moisturize it daily and seal even if I'm bunning it
3 My hair grows out and not down.

...... what do you think?

Protective Styling Update

I'm currently in week 4 of wearing my weave.  I'm happy to say I'm not missing my hair but I didn't like this type of hair I bought this time.  It was less curly than normal and tangles if you look at it wrong. This Saturday I will be coming out of it and resting my hair for two weeks before I go into Kinky Twists.  I will also have a review soon for the brand new line Soultanicals so be on the look out. Talk to you soon!

Things I wish I knew when I first went natural

1. Sectioning your hair makes everything easier.
  •  His/Her braid outs might dry overnight but yours need to be a little smaller or  sit under a dryer for a bit.
2. Everyone who goes natural doesnt experience the same milestones.
  •       Just because your favorite natural is beyond Arm Pit Length at 2 years doesnt mean this will happen to you
3. Natural isn't a movement for all
  • Its awesome you want to use as natural or organic products as can be  but dont knock lady over there using crisco, grease, cones and parabens. Its a personal choice
4. Protective Styling isnt the end all.
  • Find other ways to style your hair if the ones you see arent working out for yourself
5. Patience
  • Routines , Styling,  Product selections, take time. Stick with something for a period of time before you decide it isnt working. It can be the way youre using it and not what youre using.

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil

I LOVE Tropical Traditions products,  I guess that might seem a little wild being as I haven't tried ALL of their products. I guess, what I should say is I love the concept of Tropical Traditions and the quality of the products I have tried. I was sent their Virgin Coconut oil with the Gold Label to review and I'm super excited.  Can you tell?

I use coconut oil a lot in my hair routine and on occasion my body as well. I use coconut oil to pre-poo my hair prior to any type of washing, whether its a cowash or a shampoo. My hair strands do not like to be manipulated much and with the use of the coconut oil, it has cut shedding and breaking to a minimum.

I look forward to using this and comparing with my generic coconut oil and Vatika oil. Stay Tuned. Anyone else ever try any Tropical Traditions items?

L.O.C. Method

I'm sure you have heard of this method going around the natural community.  Its been out for awhile though but it may be new to some of you all so I thought I would share. The basis is you use a liquid to moisturize, a oil to seal the moisture in from the liquid and then a cream to seal the moisture in for the oil.  For some of you that might be a lot of product but what I have found is when they say a little they really mean a little is all you need.

I have only used this method on dry hair and not freshly washed *

I don't have any problems keeping moisture in my hair but this method is great for a lazy winter styler like myself.  I have tried it out on my wash n gos to stretch the days before washing and it works great.  I recently tried it out with an unusual combination of products.

I used Qhemet Biologics Moringa Tree Conditioning Ghee as my liquid , Qhemet Biologics Aethiopika Hydrate & Twist Butter as my oil, and Reve Essentials Hair & Body Moisturizing Creme as my cream. I say unusual because the Moringa Tree is a multipurpose item and the Twist butter emulsifies down into an oil, it doesn't start that way.

I had prior to using the items a shrunk TWA, not only did the Moringa Tree conditioning ghee moisturize my hair , it detangled it beautifully.

I don't really have any hold, as seen in the picture above, but my hair is soft and fluffy. There is a little sheen to my hands when I touch my hair but it isn't overly greasy at all.

Fall is here and so is my friend.........Lazy

Its been such a hectic last few weeks for me that my hair is the least of my worries. I have so many reviews to do its not even funny plus a business venture is about to be in the works in the next two months.  Stay tuned for that because its going to be super cool. Well last week I tried a new product called Pop N Curls by Neutrlab and it might be an interesting styler for the winter.  I didn't give it my all because I was traveling and staying at a hotel so I was a little rushed.  I used the sample of Paul Mitchell Original Awapuhi shampoo that so happened to be in the hotel.  It was so ironic because earlier at a mall outing I picked up another bottle of Paul Mitchell Original Conditioner.  I love that stuff!  It works great as a leave in conditioner. The shampoo wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.  It cleansed my scalp and didn't leave my hair too hard.  I conditioned with my trusty Tresemme Naturals Conditioner , rinsed , then added the Paul Mitchell conditioner as a leave in, then raked in the Pop n Curls for my WnG styler.  My hair wasn't uber defined but it was soft. The next day my hair shrunk but was easy to separate . I put twists in to stretch my hair with the Pop N Curls and wore a twist out the next day.

Every day after that at night I found myself  moisturizing , sealing and then putting my hair into two ponytails.   Once I arrived at work, I would take down shake and rock a semi stretched fro.  Well here it is almost a week later and I'm still doing the same thing.   Its funny,  I lightly finger-detangle after taking the ponytail down , shake , pat it in places and go about my business.  No muss no fuss.  Heck I cant even find my satin bonnet and its not worrying me in the least.

I'm not sure how long I will do this, but for now , its super convenient.

Fall is upon us... or at least a little taste is visiting

I was so happy these last 3 weeks. All this lovely rain in the state of New Jersey along with Curl Activator gel has had my curls in heaven.  Well this morning the temperature dropped and there went my hair lol.  Its brought to mind that pretty soon I'm going to have to make up my mind about what I want to do with my hair.  I'm stuck on whether I should get a weave or kinky twists. Lingering in the back of my head is even the thought to just protective style with my own hair. I don't know really.  I  don't protective style for length but simply because when its cold, my hair is the last thing I want to be bothered by.

What will you all be doing for the fall/winter?  Give a sister some ideas...

Remixed my Flaxseed Spritz

Last month I made a spritz but I didnt use flaxseeds in it. It turned out awesome so I decided to make another one but this time with flaxseeds.  I only make enough for a months use and keep it in the fridge so I dont use a preservative.

The last time I had in it 100% Aloe Vera, infused with marshmallow root, horsetail ,irish moss comfrey root and saw palmetto, amla castor oil, wheat germ oil, sunflower oil and honeyquat. This time I will still infuse the aloe vera but then simmer flaxseeds in it until the liquid coats the spoon. Im going to take out the honeyquat and add in , gotu kola, lavender, and chamomile.

Isnt she lovely?

Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion-Giveaway-CLOSED

I love the Curl Junkie Smoothing Lotion.  This is an awesome leave in conditioner(for me), from the smell to the slip that it gives as I am adding it to my hair. Its easily something that I use consistently in my hair routine.  A lovely friend of mine recently tried it out but didn't like it due to the glycerin.

Blue Algae Protein Mask DIY

After trying Camille Roses Algae mask I was tempted to find out what was in it so I could make it myself. I usually take the main ingredients in a deep conditioner and alter them to my likes if I find myself not wanting to pay for an item.

Dry Hair

I had heard of Algae in deep conditioners before from looking at Aubrey Organics .  I wanted to try It but never purchased it due to the price and size of the container. Its called AO  Blue Green Algae Hair Rescue Conditioning Mask.

IT claims :
There's no better conditioner for the hair than protein. And there's no better source of vegetable protein than blue green algae, made up of over 50% utilizable protein, all the major amino acids and a long list of vitamins and minerals. We combine it with organic shea butter, organic aloe and other moisture-rich herbals in this ultra-conditioning mask ideal for chemically treated or damaged hair.
Organic Blue Green Algae

INGREDIENTS INCI: Aqua, cetyl alcohol, alcohol denat. (38b, lavender*), aloe barbadensis (aloe) leaf juice, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), hydrolyzed rhodophycea extract, glycerin, citrus grandis (grapefruit) extract, aphanizomenon flos aquae (blue green algae)*, glyceryl linoleate, glyceryl linolenate, tocopherol acetate, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) water, ascorbic acid, glycine soja (soybean) oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract, beta-carotene

$14.33 for 4oz

IT claims

This vitamin packed treatment is designed to stop breakage, strengthen hair fibers and promote growth! Blue green algae is composed of 50 to 71% Protein along with all the major Amino Acids. Our special formula is combined with  vitamins that are  excellent for cell growth and very beneficial to the hair as well as the scalp. It can also be used as a Pre-shampoo conditioning treatment.

Ingredients: aloe vera juice, wheat protein, hemp seed oil, coconut oil, shea butter, mango butter, jojoba oil, rose hip, green tea, blue green algae, panthenol, msm,and  biotin.
BENEFITS: Decrease breakage, shedding and thinning hair. Restore moisture, strengthen fibers and promotes growth!

$17.50 for 8oz

I tried the Camille Rose mask and was very pleased with one use, unfortunely when I went to use it again the product had grown mold. It was in a closed closet but I guess the warmth we have been receiving over the last 2 months was stronger than the preservative. I decided to make my own mask using some of the key ingredients featured in each mask. I only used enough for one time as I didnt want it going bad on me.

My mix contained
2oz Blue Algae
2oz Amla powder
3oz Shea Butter
1oz Hemp Seed oil
1oz Monoi Tahiti Coconut oil
2 oz Aloe Vera Gel
3 oz Conditioner

After all of the ingredients were mixed, I prepoo'd my hair with AO Rosa Mosqueta conditioner. Its a really nice conditioner that puts moisture back into the hair. I then shampoo'd my hair with the AO Rosa Mosqueta Shampoo because I wanted to start with a clean slate. After letting the shampoo sit on my scalp for a minute, I rinsed and then applied my Blue Algae mask that I mixed it. I was very creamy and easy to add to the hair.

NOTE: This stuff makes a mess just like henna does, so be prepared. Little blue green spots were all over my bathroom. I immediately wiped them up with a little cleaner. I wasnt sure if it would stain and I wanted to be sure.

As I was applying it I noticed that it soaked into my hair strands and the vivid blue green tinge started to disappear.

Once rinsed out after 20 minutes my hair felt strong. It wasn't a hard feeling but a pliable strong feeling to my strands. I immediately put a moisturizing deep conditioner on for a few seconds because I am protein sensitive and  algae is a type of protein

If your hair doesn't like Shea Butter and any of the oils you can also sub them out  for your favorites.
Happy mixing!

Heritage by Aerist : Part Two

Clay added
I recieved these products after finding the owner on Instagram. I love clay and I love flax seed gel so I asked to try them out and she was gracious enough to send them.

I have been in a protective style for 6 weeks and my hair WAS dirty! I detangled the shed hair after removing the beehive braid that's under the weave with organic coconut oil. After that I applied the clay in sections to the very front and the back in two big sections.  One thing I will note with the clay is I liberally applied water so that it was smoother when adding,

 6 weeks of PS'n

After keeping the clay in for 30 minutes, I then rinsed and applied the Moisturizer to my damp twists and re-twisted  after smoothing it thru the sections

Ingredients: Organic aloe vera juice, clay minerals, organic nettle, olive oil, organic honey, essential oil blend, love.

Note: Emulsify the moisturizer until it turns clear before adding it to your hair.
Hair Rinsed

There were some sections of my hair where the Shea butter moisturizer is visible because I forgot to emulsify before adding it. After doing that step I added the FSG to each twisted section and moved on until my head was completely done.
Ingredients: Organic shea butter, organic coconut oil, jojoba oil, castor oil, olive oil, vitamin E oil, essential oil blend, love
Moisturizer added

I think this line is going to be a winner. Its simple and not hard at all to do. I also have to say, I DID NOT condition my hair after using the clay, I went straight to the moisturizer step. Usually after wearing my hair in such a long protective style I would deep condition for a long time but honestly, I wanted to try the product out sans deep conditioning and two, I was lazy, it is Sunday after all , lol.
Ingredients: Purified water, organic flax seeds, castor oil, vitamin E oil, essential oil blend, love.

FSG added

Currently my hair is drying and I will update this post in 24 hours after its fully dried.
