So now what do I do with these products?

Youve decided to branch out and try some new products, you suck up the price and try to keep your eye on the prize, PERFECT hair!!.

Well once you try it and realize that you can only get one use out of it, you toss it to the side and there it sits, collecting dust in product purgatory.

If its a curl cream, use it to refresh that stale WnG, or to pull all your hair back into a puff the day before you wash.

If its a shampoo, use it to shave, wash delicates, body wash, or a facial cleanser.

Butters that were too heavy , a prepoo , deep conditioner or steam treatment

Oils can be used on the face or even in place of lotion.

The sky is the limit. Push come to shove , donate!

Ecostyler Replacement? Xtreme Professional Styling Gel : The Review

OK so as usual on the ever-loving product pushing website aka Naturally Curly  there was thread talking about how a young lady found a gel that she feels is better than EcoStyler gel.  I was thinking too myself a lot of people have claimed this but I kept an eye on the thread.  Now I love me some Ecostyler because its cheap, I can get it locally , it defines and elongates my hair BETTER than any product out there hands down.. The only downside to Ecostyler is the level of how hard my hair winds up feeling after and the protein. My favorite natural gel is Kinky Curly s Curling Custard and we all know the price and having to watch what products you use with KCCC can be a heartache. I love it though because it really defines my hair and leave its so soft. Well. so now you say there is something better than Ecostyler? I kept my eyes out locally and lo and behold Tuesday night I saw it in a local Beauty Supply Store.  The natural who started the thread mentioned the green one which I saw but I didn't want to get  a  large jar of if I didn't like it, so I settled on the small 8.8oz clear jar.

Directions:  apply in your hands, rub palms to evenly distribute, then apply as needed to either wet or dry hair, comb as desired.
First Impressions: The product has a subtle, sweet  smell that I found very pleasant. The consistency is like Ecostyler gel  but it feels heavier as you apply it. My hair was so shiny and  elongated but best of all as it was drying my hair felt moist. It didn't harden until the next day,  but even then it wasn't a crunch it was more so a firm hold. Right now I'm so in love with how much softer my hair is compared to Ecostyler that Im scared that it was a fluke lol. I only used CJ Smoothing Lotion underneath as a leave in conditioner.
Concerns/Expectations: I hope it continues to perform the same if I choose to use it in the winter because glycerin is the 5th ingredient

Beauty Assortment for the SunKissed Giveaway- Winner

I'm happy to announce the giveaway winner is Allison  C

Her comment was pretty awesome and right on point. Allison please email me with your mailing address as soon as you can. ahappynappyaffair@gmail.com

I deep condition once a week (sometimes twice if the weather is a little harsh). Since going natural I have been sticking to all natural products...so the first things are I look for (starting at the bottom of the list) are parabens, cones, etc. If I don't see any of my personal no no's then I move back to the list and check it out. Things that make me excited on the list are oils that moisturize (grapeseed, mango, avocado, sweet almond, etc) and other ingredients that help retain moisture (honey, agave, etc). I look for my hair to look, feel and be moisturized for the week after I deep condition, if I get these things (along with a great scent) then it is on my repurchase list!

To everyone that commented and followed please stay tuned to September/Octobers giveaway!

DO you have your own leave in mix recipes?

Sometimes I love to mix up just about anything. I honestly thought about opening my own ETSY but  for some reason this year, my life took a 360 turn and in between work and the devil working overtime to see me fall I've putting it off to the side for now, however  I LOVE mixing.

I made the Kimmytube leave in and it really didn't wow me because I usually do the same thing but in different steps.  I saw this leave in on lola zabeth blog and it looks REALLY good.  I don't use trader joes nourish spa anymore though. I use to STAN hard for it but over time my hair started to react to the ingredients, so I left it in the dust.  You can of course alter it to your needs so  I might substitute the nourish spa for Tresemme Natural Conditioner.

Do you have a special leave in ,  share the deets!!!

Here are the tidbits

  • 1 cup Trader Joe Nourish Spa Conditioner (moisturizing base)
  • 1/4 cup Aloe Vera Juice (pH balance)
  • 1/8 cup Castor Oil (sealing)
  • 1/8 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Coconut Oil in Spring, Summer and Fall (penetrating)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Wheat Germ Oil (ceramides)

Bentonite Clay with a twist

Instead of water I used aloe vera , fenugreek, and a tad bit of ACV. Man, does the fenugreek give the clay enough slip when wet. It makes the clay easy enough to use and detangle at the same time.

Henna Gloss

Instead of a full strength henna I did a henna gloss with pre-made henna from a couple of months ago. I kept it stored in the freezer wrapped in saran wrap. I let it thaw out and mixed it with a conditioner I wasn't really that fond of. It left a little color on my hair but henna glosses are more so for conditioning as you are added in more conditioner than anything else. After rinsing I didn't need to deep conditioner, I just conditioned and went along my way. 5 napps up to henna gloss!!

B.A.S.K Beauty Initial Product Review

The night before last I did a henna gloss and then tried out some new styling products, that review will come later this weekend.  I really wanted to hold off on doing my hair so soon but my new BASK  Beauty products had arrived and I just couldn't resist trying them. I wanted to shampoo my hair to start with a clean slate so I used Deity of America Plant shampoo but prior to that I pre poo'd my hair with Hairveda Vatika frosting topped with Sheamoisture Yucca & Baobab Thickening Volumizing Deep Treatment. After washing out the prepoo and pooing  I applied B.A.S.K. Beauty Cacao Bark Deep Conditioning Hair Treat.
Cacao Bark Deep Conditioning Hair Treat

Let me tell you the smell and consistency of  this hair treatment is outstanding, I seriously stared at it for awhile because it looked just like pudding. I was so tempted to stick my finger in just to taste a little lol. It was easy to spread over my hair , the only thing I could say is I wish it was a little looser in texture so I could use less.

Java Bean &Honey Hair Balm
After rinsing the deep treatment out after 30 minutes, I applied my leave in of Beija Flor Naturals Creme Brulee ,twisted my hair into big twists to dry a little before moisturizing and styling with the Palm Tapoica  Deluxe Hair Cream and Java Bean and Honey Hair Balm

Palm Tapioca Deluxe Hair Cream

After keeping the twists in for the night , the next morning I unleashed them for a twist out that had a high shine , lovely bounce and pleasant smell. I had five different people come up to me and ask me what I did to my hair and how I got it like that. I knew the shine was nice but I just assumed my it was the same as my usual twist outs , not so!!  I cant wait to see how it holds up over the night three days.

I have to say the ingredients are nice, the scent has won me over and the overall result from using everything is  right up my alley.

Amazing

6 month twist-out/twists/braid-out/braid challenge

I  cant take my WnGs anymore ,  as much as I love them  for some reason this year my hair is retaining more water. It seems a if my hair cant make up its mind whether to be low porosity or high porosity, It has characteristics of both.  It loves oils and emollients, the hair sank to the bottom ,however some product don’t absorb at all , my hair takes forever to dry , yet it gets wet really quick.  The majority of my hair is 4a and above each ear  is  strip of 4b, where product really doesn’t absorb it shrinks down more than anything and is also very fragile.
Texture
My hair really needs and thrives in protective styles but I don’t like to do them other than in the winter, however enough is enough. I need to have dry hair after styling the next day. If my hair isn’t dry my style looks a hot mess and quite frankly Im tired of it.

So my plan for the next 6 months is to maintain at some point twists, twist outs , braid outs, mini braids, kinky twists( extreme cold), and bantu knot outs. I use a henna/clay/Ayurvedic once a month, August I did a henna gloss, so September I will clay and October, Ayurvedic, etc. I’m using Deity of America Plant Poo as a shampoo. With my WnG, I was shampooing once a week and cowashing every three day, now that I’m switching my styling up. I will still shampoo once a week and co wash every three to four days depending on how my scalp is feeling/hair looks.

Presentation is the key

I like how SageNaturalceuticals packaged my item and the shipping turnaround, whhattt I don't like is the difference in price that I paid for Original Moxie Shape Shifter.  On OM website its $24 on SN it was $28, if I hadn't used the 30% off discount I would have been really unhappy.

Tired of shea based products........well come take a look see

I have nothing against Shea based products however depending on how far up it is in the ingredient list it sometimes can make my hair feel really heavy and or leave a gray cast to it.  I still use a lot of products with Shea in it but it usually has to be on dry hair or as a treatment that has been or will be rinsed out.  I have taken note of some lines that do not use Shea butter . I will list a few products from each line that I noticed either is all non Shea based or offers other ingredients besides Shea butter.

If you find any extra special non Shea butter based items please let me know!

Well now.........

Queen Helene Royal Curl Try Out

On May 6th , 2011I posted an entry detailing Queen Helene foray into the natural hair care game.  I finally had the chance to get a couple of the products and cant wait too see what my experience is. Not only are the products affordable , I'm able to get them at my local Whole Foods and the ingredients don't seem to be too harsh.

The Curl Shaping Creme looks like a loose flax seed gelly in the container, the smell seems to be almost a lemony citrus fragrance, hopefully it doesn't linger. Glycerin is the second ingredient followed by pectin in the creme. The  moisture rich conditioner is a thicker lotion like consistency  with a light scent, the third ingredient in the conditioner is BTMS , the Stay Clean Shampoo also seems to be a slight lotion texture as well. The scent isn't overpowering at all.

Stay tuned!

Beauty Assortment for the SunKissed Giveaway- CLOSED

I am of course a sucker for a lovely website and more so lovely products. I saw this line up on NaturallyCurly when NEA posted a thread on it. Oh my goodness do the ingredients, pictures, and descriptions of the products call to the inner product junkie in me.  I recently submitted an order myself to try them out but I also reached out to the owner to see if she would so so gracious to sponsor a giveaway.  I'm happy to say that she agreed. Her is some information about the company B.A.S.K

http://www.baskbeauty.com/

b.a.s.k., LLC - launched spring 2011 - is the vision of Rashida Jefferson, a dedicated natural beauty product connoisseur & "cosmetic chef". Mostly inspired by pure flavors used in the field of dessert culinary arts - many of her beauty concoctions are small-batch crafted with the infusion of sweet ingredients such as raw honey & agave nectars, chocolate & coffee beans, & Amazonian fruits. All creations are original recipes made from scratch in her cosmetics studio located in Macon, Georgia.

B.A.S.K. is a specialty beauty company established to innovatively craft premium, gourmet-inspired, artisanal spa delectables that cater to the ethnic woman's different cosmetic needs - such as dryer skin types and diverse hair patterns. Our products aim to indulge those natural beauty aficionados who are seeking the finest ingredients without the compromise of effectiveness, luscious sweet aromas, & textures.

The giveaway will feature  the Cacao Bark Deep Conditioning Hair Treat.

After days of stress, over-styling, and mistreatment - your natural curls could use nothing more than just good old fashioned "comfort food", and this "look good enough to eat" chocolate hair mask gives your hair the retreat it craves!

We take a base of pure premium cocoa butter, coconut cream, & kukui moluccano - fold in nutrient-rich amalaki fruit & conditioner beads for detangling - and finish off with drizzles of amber agave nectar. The result is the most decadent chocolate dessert for your curls to feed on.

How to Use:

- Using a wide tooth comb - part freshly washed, damp hair in large sections & apply chocolate conditioner to each section & gently comb through. Cover hair with plastic cap & allow the chocolate treatment to soak for a minimum of 30 minutes (use a steamer for an even more intense treatment). Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Results will be ultra soft, detangled natural curls!

Ingredients: Distilled Water, Prime Pressed Cocoa Butter, Virgin Coconut Cream, Kukui Moluccana Seed Oil, Agave Nectar, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Raw Cocoa Powder,Amalaki Fruit Powder, Cetyl Alcohol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin.

Naturally aromatic of dark chocolate (no fragrance added) with a texture of soft chocolate pudding.

Rules : You must be a follower of my blog and simply leave a comment on how often you deep condition, what you  look for when purchasing a deep conditioner and what results do you expect to receive from that deep conditioner.

The giveaway will run August 4-26th 2011
